The public is invited to the San Marcos Area League of Women Voters Candidates Debate scheduled for Monday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center. The Debate will feature candidates in contested San Marcos City Council races for Council Member, Place 1, and Council Member, Place 2. Two candidates are vying for Place 1, the seat being vacated by Kim Porterfield, who has chosen not to run again. Those two candidates are Lisa Prewitt and Bill Taylor. Two candidates are challenging the incumbent Jude Prather for Place 2. The two challengers are Thom Prentice and Mason Murphy. "All five candidates have accepted the League's invitation to participate in the Debate," states Jeannie Lewis, Candidates Debate Coordinator. Serving as moderator for the Debate is long-time League member and current Voter Service Chair, Carole Belver. The five candidates will appear on the November 5 Ballot for the General Election. In addition, eligible voters in the City limits can vote on 25 Propositions as Amendments to the City Charter. Lewis says, "The League will hand out free Voters Guides at the Debate with explanations of all the Propositions." She continued, "Also, all eligible voters of Hays County can vote on the nine Propositions as Amendments to the State Constitution, and we'll have Voters Guides that explain those, too." The local League's Voters Guide will be included in the Sunday, Oct. 13, issue of the San Marcos Daily Record and will be available on-line as soon as possible thereafter. The printed Guide will also be available at the San Marcos Public Library and other public locations throughout the county. In addition, candidates' responses to local League questions will be published at the League's VOTE411.org website, a nationwide online network of electoral information specific to each voter's address. VOTE411.org for the San Marcos and Wimberley area will be available Sunday, October 13. "We are very enthusiastic about our VOTE411 online Voters Guide," says Lewis. "Unlike the printed Guide, the information at VOTE411.org is specific to the voter's own address, precinct, and district, so there is no confusion when they go to the polls of who will be on their specific ballot."
