Dr. Seuss Reading Day

Celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss by reading with United Way United Way of Hays County invites volunteers to join together on February 28 for Dr. Seuss Reading Day, an event to celebrate the birthday of the great author Dr. Seuss by reading at local childcare centers. The Dr. Seuss Reading Day is a fun, lighthearted event to emphasize the importance of early childhood literacy. United Way will provide volunteers with classic red and white stripped hats, books to share and other goodies for the childcare centers to keep and enjoy. Volunteers will experience, firsthand, the difference reading can make in a child's life, creating memories the students will always remember. Childcare centers and pre-schools in San Marcos, Kyle, Buda, Wimberley and Dripping Springs have been invited to participate. Dozens of volunteers are needed to take part in the event. "This event is a meaningful way to give back to young students," says Michelle Harper, President/CEO United Way of Hays County. "Volunteers give just a half hour of their morning on February 28, however, during those 30 minutes the minds of these young children are being developed, engaged and inspired." The Dr. Seuss Reading Day event is a part of the Mentors Make a Difference initiative, the newest United Way of Hays County program, aimed at increasing access to reading, tutoring and mentoring programs to guide the success of all students and young children. Through literacy events like Dr. Seuss Reading Day, United Way of Hays County aims to provide rich learning opportunities for young children, increasing interest in reading activities. By improving access to books, as well as quality learning activities, United Way aims to improve school-readiness, on grade-level reading, and a long-term goal of improving high school graduation rates for Hays County youth.
